Because of the self-conscious feeling one gets from writing in third person, you decide to write this bio in second person.

You grew up singing Southern Gospel in Michigan, performed on a Christian television show to pay for college in Virginia, and eventually landed in Nashville around 1996. You’ve been a music minister, telemarketer, voice teacher, sound engineer, traveling musician, house painter, music transcriber, songwriter and arranger, in that order. Your son Logan is your greatest joy, despite the fact he has recently surpassed you in height. You enjoy movies, reading, writing and have an abiding love of Star Wars, which may be rooted in the fact that the movie came out when you were in first grade, and your name is Luke, and you were instantly popular as a result. You can’t be sure.

You begin to worry that this second-person approach does not avoid the usual self-important tone of these bios. In fact, it may have only heightened the effect. You hope the whole thing doesn’t betray a desperate attempt to hide personal insecurities by appearing clever, but instead comes off as creative and self-possessed.

You fool no one.
