Start Planning Next Year's Easter Choir Musicals... Today!

Chances are, you’re ready to take a break from thinking about Easter music.

You probably spent months picking the perfect choral anthems and rehearsing them...only to have your key soloist come down with the flu on Maundy Thursday or your sound technician miss the track cue on the “Hallelujah Chorus.”

It happens to the best of us.

That said, one difference between “good” and “great” is the ability to be constructively self-critical immediately after an event—while the details are still fresh.

So before you turn the page on last week, take a few moments—perhaps with key team members—and write down the answers to the following questions.

Then, take them to lunch (they deserve it!), and ask them to share their answers with one another. As you facilitate the discussion, take notes and consolidate the responses into a document that you can pull out next January as you prepare next year’s Easter music!

  1. What were your two or three favorite moments in the preparation and presentation of this year’s Holy Week music?
  2. What made each of these moments so special to you?
  3. How could you use what you learned from each of these things to make next year’s Easter music as effective as possible?
  4. What were your two or three most disappointing moments in the preparation and presentation of this year’s Holy Week music?
  5. What made each of these moments so frustrating or disappointing to you?
  6. How could you use what you learned from each of these things to avoid similar frustrations next year?
  7. What non-musical element(s) best helped you experience the meaning of this year’s Holy Week?
  8. How could you effectively incorporate this into next year’s services?
  9. What non-musical element(s) hindered your experience of the meaning of Holy Week?
  10. How could this be avoided—or improved upon—for next year?
  11. What person/people did an especially great job this year? Have you had the opportunity to express your appreciation?
  12. What is the key piece of feedback from this year that your pastor wants you to remember for next year?

Every moment you spend in honest reflection can help you see the future more clearly.

The Lord is Risen, indeed!
