While many of our members ask us for easier arrangements, Discover Worship also gets requests for more challenging and sophisticated pieces. A Cappella Christmas Suite fits that bill.
Medium to high difficulty, this set of four a cappella arrangements spans the gamut from madrigal to modern—telling the Christmas story with lush vocals and poetic verse. Use the familiar KJV narrations, and you’ll have a 12-minute traditional Christmas choral musical for a Christmas Eve service or caroling setting.
Here’s a quick overview:
The narrator opens with the Gospel of John’s “He came unto his own, and his own received him not” spoken over a cappella “ooh’s” leading into Craig Adams’ emotional setting of “In the Bleak Midwinter.”
Next, the iconic King James text of the heavenly host announcing Christ’s birth to shepherds sets the stage for Tom Fettke’s classic, “The Lamb of Christmas.”
The narrator continues with Luke’s account of the shepherds finding Mary, Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. David Huntsinger’s sacred, madrigal arrangement of “The World’s Desire” is nothing less than breath-taking.
The narration concludes with an invitation to joyfully proclaim God’s good news to the world. Your choir/ensemble finishes with the upbeat England/Groeneveld arrangement of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” a playful and contemporary piece.
